Quick Description: An etched marble and stone monument on the town square with a collection of images from each of the 12 individual monuments around town. The images depict scenes from the raiding of Humboldt in Sept, 1861 and burning of the town in Oct, 1861.

Long Description:
The Humboldt Civil War Monument is the first stop of a self-guided 12-site Civil War History Tour around town.

The monuments commemorate the stories of courage and suffering which happened on Sept 8, 1861, when the town was raided by Indians and guerillas seeking runaway slaves, and on October 14, 1861, when a Confederate calvary burned the town.

The etchings were done by Chanute, KS artist Bob Cross and the stones were donated by Monarch Cement Company.

Brochures with maps for the entire 12-site tour are available at 105 and 115 S. 9th St. or at Johnson's General Store, 218 N. 9th St. Call ahead for guided tour: 620-473-2325. Brochures may also be downloaded from the associated website.
