The Humboldt Civil War Monument is the first stop of a self-guided 12-site Civil War History Tour around town.
The monuments commemorate the stories of courage and suffering which happened on Sept 8, 1861, when the town was raided by Indians and guerillas seeking runaway slaves, and on October 14, 1861, when a Confederate calvary burned the town.
The etchings were done by Chanute, KS artist Bob Cross and the stones were donated by Monarch Cement Company.
