The altar on a stone base contains a statue of the Virgin Mary dressed in white and blue and surrounded by flowers. The altar is protected by a structure composed of 3 stone walls and a double metal roof on which is written "Albergo diffuso".
Santo Stefano di Sessanio is a medieval hilltop town, adjacent to the high plain of Campo Imperatore in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. "Sessanio" or "Sextantia", as he was called in Roman times, is the patron saint of the village. Many of the structures in the village date from the 11th to the 15th century. In the 12th century, Santo Stefano was part of the barony of Carapelle, which included Castel del Monte, Calascio, Capestrano, Carapelle, Castelvecchio, Ofena and Villa S. Lucia. The entrance gate, which leads to the main square of the village, is decorated with the Medici coat of arms.
