Between Sisikon and Flüelen, directly on the shore of Lake Lucerne, lies the place that the "White Book of Sarnen" calls ze Tellen blatten around 1470. A chapel is said to have been built here as early as 1388 to commemorate William Tell's jump from Gessler's ship. The chapel is first mentioned in Heinrich Brennwald's Swiss Chronicle (1508-1516).
A brotherhood founded in 1561 held an annual celebration on the Friday after Ascension in the chapel, which had long been dedicated to Saint Sebastian, in memory of Tell, Werner Stauffacher and Arnold von Melchtal, among others. The chapel thus became an ecclesiastical memorial to the origins of the Swiss Confederation. In 1589/1590, the chapel was extended or rebuilt and decorated with a cycle of frescoes about Tell's life.
In 1599, the altars were dedicated to Saint Sebastian, William, the Trinity, Mary and all the saints. By 1645 at the latest, the procession had acquired a semi-official character when the canton of Uri assumed responsibility for the procession costs.
The current chapel was built in 1879 and was decorated with the four Tell frescoes by the Basel history painter Ernst Stückelberg until 1882. In 1884, the Uri district council decided to raise the procession to a ceremonial national procession, which was still being held at the beginning of the 21st century. Above the Tell Chapel, on Axenstrasse, there is a modern hotel with general access to the chapel.
Tellskapelle is adorned with four magnificent frescoes by the Basel artist Ernst Stückelberg; which depict "the Rütli oath", "shooting of the apple" "Tell's leap" and "the death of Gessler in the Hohle Gasse".
