The locomotives of the R.370 group were designed and built starting in 1909 in anticipation of the entry into operation of the narrow gauge railways of Sicily serving the sulphur mining basins of the provinces of Enna, Caltanissetta and Palermo, which were very important from an extractive and economic point of view at the time.

Equipped with cogwheels for circulation on lines with a rack section, they served in Sicily, on the Dittaino - Leonforte and Dittaino - Piazza Armerina - Caltagirone lines, assigned to the depots of Piazza Armerina, Licata and Lercara.

Their first use was in the conduction of convoys for miners and minerals of the sulphur basins of Lercara, Cianciana, Grottacalda and Floristella.

Le locomotive del gruppo R.370 vennero progettate e costruite a partire dal 1909 in previsione dell'entrata in funzione delle ferrovie a scartamento ridotto della Sicilia a servizio dei bacini minerari zolfiferi delle province di Enna, Caltanissetta e Palermo, allora assai importanti dal punto di vista estrattivo ed economico.

Munite di ruote dentata per la circolazione sulle linee con tratto a cremagliera, prestarono servizio in Sicilia, sulle linee Dittaino - Leonforte e Dittaino - Piazza Armerina - Caltagirone, assegnate ai depositi di Piazza Armerina, Licata e Lercara.

Il loro primo impiego fu nella conduzione di convogli per minatori e minerali dei bacini zolfiferi di Lercara, Cianciana, Grottacalda e Floristella.
