The Paramount Theatre opened September 3, 1931. The building was designed my theater architects C.W. Rapp and George L. Rapp in a Art Deco style. The theater was the first air-conditioned building in Illinois outside of Chicago. This theater became a prototype for other Paramount theaters across the country. The theater served as a venue for a variety of entertainment for more than 40 years including motion pictures, vaudeville, concerts and circus performances. The theater was closed in 1976 and renovated. The building reopened as the Paramount Arts Center in 1978 as a venue for theatrical, musical, comedy, dance along with other performances.
