The McClelland-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, inaugurated in 1971, was an ambitious project, mainly along the Arkansas River but including small sections of the White River in Arkansas and the Verdigris River in Oklahoma, that forms a navigable waterway between Tulsa, OK and the Mississippi River and thus to the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, there are 18 locks & dams which primarily provide for navigation, but which may also provide electricity and flood control.
The David D. Terry Lock & Dam, initially called Lock & Dam No. 6, was named for David Dickson Terry, five-time congressman from Arkansas during the 1930s and early 1940s. As with most of these dam sites along the Arkansas River, Terry Dam offers a variety of recreational activities including fishing, camping and all manner of water sports.
