The center of Fremont's Irvington neighborhood is the spot where Fremont Boulevard angles and Washington Boulevard intersects. In a plaza at this spot sits a seemingly out-of-place El Camino Real bell.

In the Mission days, Washington Boulevard was the road that led from Mission San Jose to their docks on the bay. Thus, it's perfectly fitting that there be a bell at this spot.

It's old and rusted and sounds like iron

and for some reason it's not hung high overhead, but is right within reach.

A marker in the ground identifies it as a gift of the Native Daughters of the Golden West.
