The Old St. Peter's Catholic Church was built in 1895. The church's origin traces back to French immigrant Pierre Wibaux, who, after becoming wealthy from cattle ranching in Montana, built the church in response to his father’s request for a Catholic church in the area. Pierre contributed $2,000 to the project, and his success led to the town and county being named in his honor. In 1938, the church was expanded, and the community, led by Father Leahy, added the distinctive scoria exterior. This church, a symbol of community effort, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The historic structure is not used for services anymore, but the church has used a more modern building on another part of the property since 1965. This old building is used as a catechism school however, and tours are available from the Wibaux Historical Society.
