In this monumental statue, close to the Independence Museum, in Ashgabat, capital city of Turkmenistan, one will see a representation of Saparmurat Niyazov, known as The First President or Turkmenbashi (leader of the Turkmen).
Saparmurat Niyazov leadership of Turkmenistan was characterized by its absolutist model and in 1999 he was appointed as President for life. Which meant 7 further years of presidency as he died in 2006, victim of a heart attack.
During his presidency an obvious cult of personality was developed and his image was present in every aspect of Turkmen life. Statues of Saparmurat Niyazov were everywhere, but his successors slowly removed them.
The statue close to the Independence Monument is one of the few remaining. It's always kept immaculate. It's the central element of a set composed by several fountains and a circle of protective eagles. Saparmurat Niyazov is represented about 1,5x life-size, on the top of the central plinth. He is wearing a formal suit and a cloak. The whole structure is in grey stone but the eagles and the former president are fully golden.
