Famous musician Jimi Hendrix died on September 18, 1970. He was originally buried in Greenwood Memorial Park with a simple headstone in a plot reserved for the Hendrix family. However, as more and more fans came to visit over the years, his father began planning a new memorial in the 1990s, to be located in a more visible and accessible location in the cemetery. After a few years of planning and construction, Jimi's remains were reburied beneath the new Jimi Hendrix Memorial in 2002.

The memorial is located inside a circular loop in the western part of the cemetery. It consists of a marble gazebo surrounded by grass and purple flowers, paying tribute to Jimi's famous song, Purple Haze. Inside the gazebo is Jimi's headstone, which is topped by a full-size stainless steel replica of Jimi's trademark Fender Stratocaster guitar. The replica is very detailed, even including steel strings where fans tuck guitar picks. Despite being stainless steel, the guitar is starting to corrode in places, but is still in fairly good condition.

The headstone embedded in the pedestal below the guitar is the original, relocated from Jimi's first burial site. The inscription reads:
Forever in our hearts
James M.
"Jimi" Hendrix
1942 - 1970
