Glenturret Distillery lies at the foot of the glen of the same name just north-west of the Perthshire resort town of Crieff on the southern edge of the Scottish Highlands. Regarded as the oldest working distillery in Scotland it was founded in 1763 by the Drummond family as Hosh Distillery, although an illicit distillery had been here on the banks of the Turret Burn since 1717.
John McCallum would take over the distillery from 1845 until 1875 when Thomas Stewart would take over and rename it as Glenturret.
The distillery would close during WWI and the Great Depression, but would be revitalised by James Fairlie in 1957. It was bought by Cointreau in 1981, then Highland Distillers in 1990, before the Edrington Group took it over in 1999 when it became the Famous Grouse Experience. It is now in the hands currently of the Lalique Group.
The distillery produces a Highland Single Malt with one wash still and one spirit still from a pipe coming down from the Turret Reservoir at the head of the glen to the north-west. The distillery lies on the right-hand side (east) of the road heading up Glen Turret from the A85 west of Crieff. A car park lies adjacent, with coach parking and the warehouses on the opposite side of the road. It is open all seven days of the week from 10.00am to 6.00pm.
