“It is my private mountain. It belongs to me. God told me if I painted it enough, I could have it.” - Georgia O’Keeffe

This painting, which was made during one of Georgia O’Keeffe’s many visits to New Mexico is part of the collection of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. O’Keeffe included the Pedernal in at least 29 of her paintings either as a background image or as the main subject. It’s basically the view south from the Ghost Ranch where she was a frequent visitor and where she moved permanently in 1949.

So enamored was Georgia O’Keeffe with the Pedernal that, in accordance with her wishes, her cremated remains were scattered from the top after her death in 1986.
