This lighthouse started is work in 15 February 1912 with a 3rd order large model rotating optical device with 500mm focal distance. It used an incadescence by petrol vapour source and the rotation was provided by a clocl mechanism. It´s build in a tower with 32 meters high, at 55 meters altitude.
From March 1916 to December 1919 the light was out due to WWI.
The original optics was moved to the Cabo Mondego lightouse and from 3 march untill 27 July 1921 the lighhtouse was out due to the replacement of the optics. The new device was also a 3rd order large model, rotating and with 2 groups of flash lights.
The lighthouse was electrified in 1947 with 2 generators and the lighthouse started to work with a 6000 wats lamp.
In 1950 air panels were added and the lighthouse started to work as an aerial and sea lighthouse.
In 1966 the light source was reduced to a 1500W lamp.
It was conected to the national electricity network in 1980 and at the same time it was automated. The lamp was also replaced by a 1000W one.
In 1983 a storm caused some major damages in the technical area of the lighthouse and in 1997/98 major reconstruction and remodeling works were made to make the lighthouse like it is today.
