An unmarked Tennessee Central (TC) caboose near Jamestown, Tennessee (Fentress County). It sits at the entrance to a private farm/estate, easily visible from the main highway, and not far from Pickett State Park.
This is a cupula “standard” caboose. It is also a “woodie” meaning its cabin and cupola were made of wood and its underside is steel. Woodies were made in the early 1900s when steel was very costly. The problem with woodies was that they shattered into pieces when hit from behind by a train. Some woodies were reinforced with steel braces but it wasn’t until the approach of WWII when steel became abundant and cheap that cabooses were made entirely of steel.
In talking with the owner, this caboose was made in the early 1930s and came into service for Tennessee Central in 1939, which ran through nearby Crossville, TN. The caboose was purchased by the owner’s grandfather at least 40 years ago and sat near Allardt, TN until about 2010 when it was moved to its present location and extensively restored. The caboose number has been lost to time. It is not visible inside and underpinning around the caboose shrouds any number on the sill from being seen.
The outside of the caboose has not been noticeably modified since its railroad days. The inside has been completely remodeled. It has city electricity, heating, AC, hot water and a full bathroom. The caboose serves as an overnight lodging rental.
This is a privately owned caboose on private land. The owner’s phone number is advertised near the caboose.
