"The Church of San Bartolomé is the construction jewel of Cherín. A beautiful example of Mudejar architecture, with a single nave covered by a frame of limebordón with braces and squares on Mannerist-style canes. The walls are built with the traditional brick and mortar technique. masonry drawers and is finished with an original brick dice cornice. At the foot, the entrance repeats the traditional Tuscan lateritial doorway scheme, enriched with a corbel or plaque that descends from the entablature to the keystone of the arch. from which it is accessed through the old baptistery, attached to the gospel side. The main chapel, of baroque conception, was built during the extension of the 18th century, with a blind and chamfered dome on pendentives. sacristy and the tower rises with a bell body with double openings between pilasters on each side, topped by a hipped roof and iron weather vane.
According to Professor Manuel Gómez-Moreno Calera, it is an old mosque adapted into a Christian temple. Due to its looting and burning during the Moorish rebellion in 1568, its current appearance is due to the reconstruction at the end of the 16th century and the extension of the main chapel during the 18th century.
The Church also presents urban and landscape values. Around it there are popular houses of Alpujarra tradition and in the small square in front of its doorway, there is the Mirador de la Iglesia, from which you can appreciate the valuable cultural heritage of La Alpujarra. We glimpse the geological heritage of the area with its hills, mountains, ravines, its gullies, its meadow and heritage assets such as the Cherín Iron Bridge."
