Hendrik P. Berlage was an artist, architect and philosopher whose innovative designs gave birth to Modernism in the Netherlands. His most famous work is the Beurs van Berlage, the old Amsterdam Stock Exchange.
The boiler house chimney doesn't look so different from a factory chimney. Originally internal, it was relocated here during the first renovations of 1906-10, after brickwork in its vicinity cracked through overheating. )
