Incorporated in 1868 as public library in memory of William Wood, local philanthropist. Mr Wood was associated with the mercantile trade and became very wealthy. In 1819 he began establishing mercantile libraries in Boston, New York, Montreal and other cities. After moving to Canandaigua in 1826, he placed a small library collection at the Court House. The library moved to it's present location in 1973. The Greek Revival style building was once a private residence. It was built in 1845 by Mark Sibley, a prominent Canandaigua lawyer.
