The trailhead for the Uranium Mine Trail is located on Fish Creek Falls Road, just before the parking area for Fish Creek Falls. It is a day use area with a small fee (currently $5.00). It is a relatively short and easy to moderate trail with an elevation gain of about 600 ft. Two hours is sufficient time for this hike.

After an initial climb, you’ll start to get some views of Fish Creek Falls from above. Fish Creek Falls is the second highest waterfall in the state of Colorado at 280 ft. You will also see the Steamboat Ski Resort off to the south. After about a mile and a half, you’ll come to the abandoned mine.

The “Fair U” claim was prospected for uranium in the early 1950s. An adit was dug about 800 feet into the hillside, but the claim proved uneconomical, and the mine was abandoned. There’s an unusual gate at the entrance designed to keep people out but allow bats to freely enter.
