A freestanding bat house is located opposite the northwest corner of the open field that houses the baseball diamond and the soccer pitch in School Street Park. The rectangular bat house is places 7' high on a wooden post. It is painted black and has a opening at the bottom.
A sign at 6' high on the post is inscribed:
Bat House
Bats are an important part of our ecosystem. A single brown ban can consume
as many as 1,000 mosquito sized insects in one night. To find their way
in the dark, some bats use echolocation or high-pitched chirps that bounce
off objects in front of them. Unlike a bird house, the inside of a bat house
is very narrow to mimic the tight spaces between a tree and its bark,
which is a bat's natural habitat.
