The Nara National Museum, founded in 1889 and opened to the public in 1895, is an important art museum located in Nara, Japan (former capital in the 8th century). It has particularly rich funds on Buddhist art. The museum also acts as a publishing house and has published various academic works as well as the Nara National Museum Bulletin (Rokuon zasshu) since 1999.

In March 2011, the museum's own funds included 1,827 pieces (including thirteen national treasures), to which must be added 1,947 pieces on loan (including 52 national treasures).

History: It was in 1889 that the Nara Imperial Museum was officially established, whose building constructed under the aegis of Katayama Tokuma is typical of the European architecture in vogue during the Meiji restoration. In addition to imperial requirements, one of the objectives of the creation of the museum was also to promote studies of ancient Buddhist arts, of which the Nara region is the cradle in Japan. The whole area extends over a former part of Kofuku-ji, at the end of present-day Nara Park. The first exhibitions were presented in 1895. In 1952, the museum became the Nara National Museum, its current name, following the reorganization of the management of state cultural affairs a few years earlier. In the second half of the 20th century, several expansions took place: the west wing in 1972, the Buddhist art library in 1980, finally the east wing and the underground passage connecting old and new buildings in 1997. Following restructuring in 2007, the museum is placed under the responsibility of the National Institute for Cultural Heritage, just like the three other national museums.

The annual exhibition of the Shoso-in treasure, which lasts a little over a week, traditionally attracts a large number of visits, 299,294 in 2009 (for a total of 635,042 in the same year).

Collections: The museum's collections benefit from the important religious heritage of Nara, the former political and religious capital, including Buddhist temples such as Todai-ji, Horyu-ji and Yakushi-ji. The pieces on display mainly date from the beginning of the 6th century (approximate arrival of Buddhism or Japan) to the end of the medieval period (around 14th century).
