The Darte Center was built in 1965 and "given" to Wilkes College by Dorothy Dickson Darte in memory of her parents, Allan Hamilton Dickson and Kate Pettebone Dickson.
In 1969, two floors were built onto the back of the theatre to serve as classrooms for the music and theatre students.
The main auditorium, named the Edward Darling, Jr. Theatre for Dorothy Dickson Darte's grandson in 1995, seats 478 and is the main stage for productions of the Wilkes University Theatre Department. Resident company Ballet Northeast also presents several productions a year here.
This main stage is home to state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, an hydraulic orchestra pit, a full-size scenic shop, and a single-purchase fly system.
Downstairs from the main theatre is the University's Black Box theatre, built in 1992-1993, used mainly for student productions.
In 1972 the CPA survived the "Flood of 1972" when Hurricane Agnes swept through the area and flooded most of the city of Wilkes-Barre. Inside the scene shop, the high water line is still visible today (2007). In the main auditorium, a color change is noticable on the armrests of the seats where the wood had to be replaced up to row H after the high waters receded.
