In this place that since the thirteenth century had its own jurisdiction, management, etc. was a no man's land between Spain and Portugal with certain privileges of both crowns.
They had a system in which three democratically appointed judges guarded the three keys to open the ark. Inside were the documents and secrets of the place.
This was the last ark, found at the end of the 19th century. It is not known if it was the first but the last.
