"In het gezellige centrum van het Zeeuws-Vlaamse koopstadje Sluis staat het Belfort, het enige van Nederland. Het Belfort van Sluis werd gebouwd in de 14e-15e eeuw. Een belfort is van oorsprong een middeleeuwse, Vlaamse toren met klokken die werden geluid bij belangrijke gebeurtenissen, zoals een brand, de nadering van een vijandelijk leger of de afkondiging van een wet. Later duidde men er het stadhuis mee aan waar de belforttoren deel van uitmaakte. Een belfort was (en is) het toonbeeld van stedelijke trots, prestige en gezag.
Museum Het Belfort
Het Belfort is een gebouw waar vele elementen samenkomen: het bestuur van de gemeente Sluis zetelt in de raadzaal, maar ook huwelijksvoltrekkingen, concerten, lezingen, geschiedenisvertellingen en moderne beeldende kunst bieden de inwoners van Sluis en de vele bezoekers een bijzondere en rijke ervaring.
De raadzaal
De historische raadzaal is de mooiste zaal van het belfort. Deze is versierd met wapenschilden en balkdecoraties en verder ‘aangekleed’ met schilderijen uit de 17e en 18e eeuw, middeleeuwse voorwerpen en een indrukwekkend, uitbundig gedecoreerd vierschaarhek uit de 18e eeuw.
De Burgemeesterskamer
De burgemeesterskamer is eveneens een kostbaar versierde pronkzaal, met weelderig goudleerbehang en Sluisse portret- en stadsschilderijen uit de voorbije twee eeuwen. Bovendien staat er fraai Vlaams en Zeeuws meubilair uit de 17e-19e eeuw.
De raadskelder
Het onderste en oudste deel van Het Belfort is de raadskelder waar historische en kunsttentoonstellingen te zien zijn. In een hoek bevindt zich de oude gevangenis met een echte pijnbank en een (nieuwe) gevangene…
De Belforttoren
Hoog in de Belforttoren staat een houten beeldje, genaamd “Jantje van Sluis”. Dit mannetje in 17e eeuwse klederdracht slaat met zijn hamer de tijd op de klokken. Hij is de ‘held van Sluis’ omdat hij Sluis redde van een Spaanse aanval. Eenmaal boven, is er een prachtig uitzicht over Sluis en het West Zeeuws-Vlaamse platteland.
Het Belfort was en is de uitdrukking van de middeleeuwse trots en welvaart van de stad, onder de hertogen van Bourgondië. Het imponerende gebouw huisvest tegenwoordig een museum, gewijd aan de Sluise stadsgeschiedenis en de beroemdste Sluizenaar, woordenboekenmaker Johan Hendrik van Dale. Ook zijn er twee minibioscopen, tentoonstellingen, stijlkamers en de indrukwekkende historische raadszaal. Vanaf de toren heb je een mooi zicht op het omringende landschap.

A belfry is originally a medieval Flemish tower with bells that were rung at important events, such as a fire, the approach of an enemy army or the promulgation of a law. Later it was used to designate the town hall of which the belfry tower was part. A belfry was (and is) the epitome of urban pride, prestige and authority.
Museum Het Belfort
The Belfry is a building where many elements come together: the council of the municipality of Sluis has its seat in the council chamber, but also wedding ceremonies, concerts, lectures, history telling and modern visual arts offer the residents of Sluis and the many visitors a special and rich experience.
The council chamber
The historic council chamber is the most beautiful room in the belfry. This is decorated with coats of arms and beam decorations and further decorated with paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, medieval objects and an impressive, elaborately decorated four-pronged gate from the 18th century.
The Mayor's Chamber
The mayor's room is also an elaborately decorated stateroom, with opulent gold leather wallpaper and Sluis portrait and city paintings from the past two centuries. In addition, there is beautiful Flemish and Zeeland furniture from the 17th-19th centuries.
The council cellar
The lower and oldest part of The Belfort is the council cellar where historical and art exhibitions can be seen. In one corner is the old prison with a real rack and a (new) prisoner…
The Belfry Tower
High in the Belfry Tower is a wooden statue called “Jantje van Sluis”. This man in 17th century costume strikes the time on the clocks with his hammer. He is the 'hero of Sluis' because he saved Sluis from a Spanish attack. Once at the top, there is a beautiful view over Sluis and the West Zeeland-Flemish countryside.
The Belfry was and is the expression of the medieval pride and prosperity of the city, under the Dukes of Burgundy. The impressive building now houses a museum, dedicated to Sluise's city history and the most famous Sluice resident, dictionary maker Johan Hendrik van Dale. There are also two mini cinemas, exhibitions, period rooms and the impressive historic council chamber. From the tower you have a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.
