"The La Atalaya tunnel is located under the La Atalaya mountain, in Laredo, (Cantabria, Spain).

It was built in 1863, with the purpose of allowing the construction of the port of La Soledad on the other side of the mountain, of which there are some remains of the built breakwaters, since the construction works of this infrastructure were not completed, because of the storms and gales that occurred during its uprising hit it until it was destroyed. During the Civil War, it was occasionally used as a shelter from aviation attacks.

It has a length of 221 meters, and at the end of it we find the Abra viewpoint, fully integrated into the natural environment, from where you can contemplate the coast of Laredo and access on foot a cliff area with a rocky and gravel beach . The tunnel was renovated and opened to the public in 1999. Its use is pedestrian only. At the end of the path, above the door at the mouth of the tunnel, there is a figure of a Virgin."
