"Santillana del Mar, a unos 30 kilómetros de Santander, es un museo vivo de una villa medieval desarrollada entorno a la Colegiata de Santa Juliana, aunque la mayoría de sus caseríos corresponden a las diversas aportaciones arquitectónicas de los siglos XIV al XVIII. El conjunto histórico-artístico de Santillana no se puede visitar más que de pie.
La villa se abre camino hacia el norte a través de una única vía, la calle de Santo Domingo, que pronto se bifurca en forma de "Y": en la de Juan Infante, que conduce a la plaza de Ramón Pelayo; y la que tomando diversos nombres (Carrera, Cantón y del Río) se dirige hasta la Colegiata.
En la plaza de, de traza triangular, se ubican algunos de los edificios más representativos: la casona de los Barreda-Bracho del siglo XVIII con escudo y pretenciosa leyenda (hoy parador de Gil Blas); las casas Del Águila y La Parra; el Ayuntamiento; la Torre de Don Borja, levantada a finales del siglo XIV y que es una de las edificaciones más nobles de Santillana, perteneciendo al poderoso linaje de los Barreda, la cual da cobijo a la Fundación Santillana; y por último, la Torre del Merino del siglo XIV, que es el edificio más antiguo, residencia fortificada de los merinos o administradores de los intereses soberanos."

"Santillana del Mar, about 30 kilometers from Santander, is a living museum of a medieval town developed around the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, although most of its hamlets correspond to the various architectural contributions from the 14th to 18th centuries. The complex historical-artistic Santillana can only be visited on foot.
The town makes its way to the north through a single road, Santo Domingo street, which soon forks in the shape of a "Y": into Juan Infante street, which leads to Ramón Pelayo square; and the one that takes various names (Carrera, Cantón and del Río) heads to the Collegiate Church.
In the square, with a triangular layout, some of the most representative buildings are located: the Barreda-Bracho mansion from the 18th century with a coat of arms and a pretentious legend (today the Gil Blas parador); the Del Águila and La Parra houses; City Hall; the Don Borja Tower, built at the end of the 14th century and which is one of the noblest buildings in Santillana, belonging to the powerful Barreda lineage, which houses the Santillana Foundation; and finally, the Torre del Merino from the 14th century, which is the oldest building, the fortified residence of the merinos or administrators of sovereign interests."
