De eerste keer dat ik dit gebouw zag vroeg ik me af of het dreigde om te vallen. Het ziet er een beetje uit dat er in alle haast nog een paar kolommen bij geplaatste zijn. Gelukkig is het een solide gebouw dat nog de nodige jaren mee gaat. Ik vind dit best een mooi gebouw , een grote aluminium doos op 368 aluminium palen.
[NL] Het Aluminium Centrum bevindt zich in de kruinen van het Aluminium Bos, boven ijle stammen die het veranderende Nederlandse licht filteren en weerspiegelen. Geruisloos doorkruist de glazen lift de zes meter hoge ruimte tussen het maaiveld en de zilverkleurige aluminium doos. Buiten ruist de wind die honderden ranke kolommen bespeelt. Binnen sluizen zonovergoten patio’s licht, lucht, ruimte en warmte in goede banen. Hier wordt gezocht naar het kleinst mogelijke overspanningsveld en de grootst mogelijke energiewinning. Een licht gebouw, belicht en verlicht: een aluminiumproduct par excellence.
Bijna zwevend op een bos van ranke aluminium kolommen is dit gebouw het product van een uitzonderlijke synergie tussen technologie en ontwerp, bedoeld om de eigenschappen van het materiaal op ruimtelijke en poëtische wijze te demonstreren. Het gebouw dient als een informatiecentrum voor de Nederlandse aluminiumindustrie en bestaat uit kantoren, tentoonstellingsruimte en een conferentiecentrum.
Winaar van meerdere internationale prijzen en gepubliceerd in honderden publicaties, ontpopte dit gebouw zich tot een icoon voor de aluminium industrie wereldwijd. “Ik wou de vraag poneren hoe een structuur zo licht kan zijn als blikje en toch een dergelijk volume kan dragen. Dit project ging niet alleen over technologie, maar vooral over de verbeelding ervan.”

The first time I saw this building I wondered if it was in danger of falling over. It looks a bit like a few more columns have been added in a hurry. Fortunately, it is a solid building that will last for many years to come. I think this is quite a nice building, a large aluminum box on 368 aluminum columns.
[EN] The Aluminum Center is located in the canopy of the Aluminum Forest, above thin trunks that filter and reflect the changing Dutch light. The glass elevator silently traverses the six-meter-high space between ground level and the silver-colored aluminum box. Outside, the wind rustles, playing on hundreds of slender columns. Inside, sun-drenched patios channel light, air, space and heat. Here we look for the smallest possible overvoltage field and the greatest possible energy extraction. A light building, illuminated: an aluminum product par excellence.
Almost floating on a forest of slender aluminum columns, this building is the product of an exceptional synergy between technology and design, intended to demonstrate the properties of the material in a spatial and poetic way. The building serves as an information center for the Dutch aluminum industry and consists of offices, exhibition space and a conference center.
Winner of several international awards and featured in hundreds of publications, this building has become an icon for the aluminum industry worldwide. “I wanted to pose the question of how a structure can be as light as a can and still carry such a volume.
