"Veterans Tribute Group members buried a time capsule, comprised of memorabilia of their days in the military Thursday morning at Elizabethtown Nature Park in front of the replica Vietnam Memorial Wall.

From dog tags and medals to more than 1,200 photos documenting the group's work on the wall, which was dedicated April 28, the time capsule contains several items related to the war.

"I hope everyone put everything they wanted in it so that when people open it in 100 years they can see what this monument is all about," said Carey "C.T." Christie, president of the Veterans Tribute Group.

One item Christie placed in the capsule was his Bronze Star for valor, which he received in Vietnam.

Several other members also placed items with personal significance. Veteran Greg Lowe placed a bracelet recognizing Capt. Charles F. Thomas IV, Lowe's best friend and roommate from college.

"Most of it is memorabilia from our days in the military, just whatever anybody thought should go in there ... related to Vietnam in some way or another," Vietnam veteran David Cowherd said.

Fellow Vietnam veteran Robert W. Griffin, who was part of the tribute group, said in the time capsule on a USB drive a little more than 1,200 photos are stored — all pertaining to the construction of the wall, which is an 80-percent scale replica of the national memorial in Washington, D.C.

"It has everything from the day we organized to the day we finished," he said.

When the time capsule is opened in 100 years, Griffin said he's sure they will be "overjoyed to see what is in there."

"It's a big history. If you look at the length of the Vietnam War, the first guy was killed in 1955 and my division, 1st Cavalry, didn't pull out until the summer of 1973. ... That was a long war," he said.

Veteran Marcus Ray said the capsule likely would be opened by the group's great-grandchildren or great-great-grandchildren.

"They will see stuff that was really in Vietnam, not just books or stories," he said. "They will actually see artifacts that were in the country. They will see berets that some of us wore. They will see medals that some of them received. There will be pictures."

The plaque marking where the time capsule is buried was donated by Keith Monument."
