"El palacio de Sobrellano, también conocido como palacio del marqués de Comillas, situado en la población de Comillas (Cantabria, España) fue obra del arquitecto catalán Joan Martorell quien lo construyó por encargo del primer marqués de Comillas, Antonio López y López, acabando las obras en el año 1888. El edificio, de estilo neogótico, tiene planta rectangular y posee en el interior muebles de Antoni Gaudí y pinturas de Eduardo Llorens. En el exterior hay esculturas de Joan Roig.
Junto al palacio se encuentra una hermosa capilla-panteón de corte también gótico perpendicular inglés y centroeuropeo con mobiliario de Gaudí y esculturas modernistas de Joan Roig, Josep Llimona, Venancio Vallmitjana y Agapito Vallmitjana.
Fachada principal
Fue el primer edificio de España en utilizar la luz eléctrica, ya que el primer marqués la mandó instalar para una de las visitas de Alfonso XII, aunque finalmente se alojó en la Casa Ocejo ya que la instalación no estuvo terminada a tiempo.
Obras como este palacio, el Capricho de Gaudí, el Quiosco de Comillas, la Universidad Pontificia o el cementerio con su magnífica escultura de El Ángel exterminador de Josep Llimona sobre las ruinas del viejo monasterio gótico hicieron que importantes arquitectos y artistas modernistas catalanes del momento dejaran su impronta en esta población.
Actualmente el palacio es propiedad del Gobierno de Cantabria y es un museo, aunque también se utiliza temporalmente como sede de los cursos de la Fundación Comillas hasta que finalice la rehabilitación del seminario mayor del edificio de la antigua Universidad Pontificia."

"The Sobrellano palace, also known as the palace of the Marquis of Comillas, located in the town of Comillas (Cantabria, Spain) was the work of the Catalan architect Joan Martorell who built it on behalf of the first Marquis of Comillas, Antonio López y López, finishing the works in 1888. The building, in neo-Gothic style, has a rectangular floor plan and has furniture by Antoni Gaudí and paintings by Eduardo Llorens inside. Outside there are sculptures by Joan Roig.
Next to the palace is a beautiful chapel-pantheon also of English and Central European Perpendicular Gothic style with furniture by Gaudí and modernist sculptures by Joan Roig, Josep Llimona, Venancio Vallmitjana and Agapito Vallmitjana.
Main facade
It was the first building in Spain to use electric light, since the first marquis had it installed for one of the visits of Alfonso XII, although it was finally housed in the Casa Ocejo since the installation was not completed on time.
Works such as this palace, Gaudí's Capricho, the Comillas Kiosk, the Pontifical University or the cemetery with its magnificent sculpture of The Exterminating Angel by Josep Llimona on the ruins of the old Gothic monastery made important Catalan modernist architects and artists of the time stop its imprint on this population.
Currently the palace is property of the Government of Cantabria and is a museum, although it is also temporarily used as the headquarters of the Comillas Foundation courses until the rehabilitation of the major seminary of the old Pontifical University building is completed."
