The Grote Kerk is a late nineteenth-century Dutch Reformed Church from 1898, built in the neo-Gothic architectural style typical of that time. The building is iconic for Alblasserdam and has been a national monument since 1999.

The period 1940-1945 also left the Grote Kerk untouched. During the war, the masonry on the southwest side of the church was severely damaged. It was decided not to remove these damages but to maintain them.

In recent decades, various restoration work has been carried out on the church. These started in November 1980 with the restoration of the Meijer organ, which was completed in January 1982. In 1989, work began on restoring the interior of the church. This work lasted until 1998 and was carried out almost entirely by volunteers. Many church members still have vivid memories of this period.

In 1996 it turned out that the tower was in such poor condition that a major restoration was necessary. Available finances for restoration were not available. That is why some energetic members of the community set up a foundation, Stichting Behoud Toren Grote Kerk. In mid-2002, the province of South Holland awarded a subsidy for the restoration of the tower. In March 2003, the work was put out to tender and restoration of the outside of the church and the outside and inside of the tower started. The restoration was completed in March 2004. We can note with gratitude that future generations can also come together in a well-maintained church. Without the contributions from the province, the municipality of Alblasserdam, foundations, companies and residents of Alblasserdam and the surrounding area, this restoration would not have been possible.
