Situated 16.5 km North of Bucharest center, Henri Coanda International Airport is the largest Romanian airport. In 2023, 14,630,715 passengers used the airport.

Where there is now an airport, there used to be a military base and between 1944 and 1965 there was a military airport with a runway of 1200 metres. In 1965, the runway was extended to 3,500 meters and the airport changed to an international airport in 1969.
