The Battle of Ponte-Novo (Corsican: Ponte Novu or Pontenovu), which took place from 8 to 9 May 1769, was the end of the confrontation between Pascal Paoli's troops - made up of Corsicans and German and Swiss mercenaries - and the armies of the King of France, Louis XV, aided by Corsican soldiers from the French party. Opening the road to Corte, capital of the Corsican Republic, to the French grenadiers, this battle marked the end of the second and final phase of the French conquest of Corsica.
The forces involved numbered around 15,000 on both sides.
Even today, the battle of Ponte-Novo is commemorated every year on 8 May, and is often the subject of re-enactments in period costume.
The Genoese bridge linking the two banks of the Golo at Ponte-Novo was the scene of a direct confrontation between Paolist troops made up of Corsicans and Prussian mercenaries, and the French armies, which were nevertheless joined by many Corsican fighters. It was destroyed during the Second World War.
