The Altar a la Patria consists of a set of six monumental marble columns arranged in a semicircular manner, with sculptures of torches at the top of the columns. At the top of the shaft there are sculptures of eagles, made of bronze. At the bottom, a round sculptural group that shows a woman representing the country, who holds a dead cadet with one of her arms and with the other holds an olive branch, symbolizing peace. Another male sculpture remains standing next to the homeland and holds a flag of Mexico from the First Federal Republic, used from 1823 to 1864. At the base of the set the inscription "To the defenders of the Homeland 1846-1847" reads. The monument finishes the access of the so-called Gate of the Lions in the first section of the forest from Juventud Heroica Avenue, which was open to automobile circulation when the monument was inaugurated.

The monument protects the remains of General Felipe Santiago Xicoténcatl and those of six people that the Mexican Army identified in 1947 as those of the so-called "hero children."

It was inaugurated on September 27, 1952.
