"The Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium was inaugurated on July 20, 1965, the day that marked the tenth anniversary of Calouste Gulbenkian's death. The idea of building a planetarium in Lisbon arose from the fascination and enthusiasm for astronomy of a Portuguese Navy officer, Commander Eugénio Conceição Silva. The result of a partnership between the Portuguese Navy and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the commander's dream became a reality: Lisbon would even have a planetarium.

The authorship of the work fell to the architect Frederico George, having begun in September 1963. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation paid for the optical projection system, the UPP 23/4 model from the Zeiss brand, which was manually operated, and operated uninterruptedly around 40 years old. In March 2002, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Portuguese Navy established a protocol that materialized, in 2004, in the acquisition of a new projection system, the Zeiss optical projector — The Universarium model IX. This partnership gave the Planetarium the status of Centro Ciência Viva, changing its name to Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium – Centro Ciência Viva.

Faced with a world teeming with new technologies that are increasingly sophisticated and impactful, with content in different areas of knowledge, the concept of planetarium sessions has been rethought. In the new concept for the Planetarium, a hybrid projection system was chosen. This new architecture is built by an optical projection, ensured by the continuity of the Universarium and by a fulldome digital projection system, from Zeiss. The fulldome digital projection is constructed by 8 VELVET LED projectors, which corresponds to a configuration of 8 image channels projected sectorally on the dome, providing a complete image without any traces of separation.

Although astronomy continues to be the main theme, now the Marinha Planetarium, with the fulldome projection system, is able to provide visitors with shows and presentations, displaying content from other areas such as life sciences, sport, history or even abstract music shows. The year 2021 marks the history of the planetarium, with the beginning of a new way of traveling through the Universe and approaching other topics. After all, communicating science creates emotions. The Marine Planetarium is currently[when?] the second largest in Europe with the most advanced digital system in existence."
