About the Painted Desert Inn: Originally built in the 1920's out of petrified wood, and later rebuilt out of adobe the Painted Desert Inn has served as a tourist attraction since well before Route 66 passed close by. Now a museum and gift shop run by the National Parks Department the Inn continues to serve the humans who enjoy the park.
The bat boxes stand at the head of the Painted Desert Rim Trail which departs from the Inn and continues either SE to the next scenic view pull-off, or down onto the floor of the Painted Desert. The boxes are elevated on a pole.
