[FR] Cette place au centre du bourg, autour de l'ancienne église, fut jusqu'en 1830, la dernière demeure des tournonnais. Au cours de différents travaux, on a trouvé des tombes datant du Haut Moyen Age ainsi que des poteries funéraires du 12ème siècle.

Après le transfert du cimetière (route de Douadic), on planta en 1840, sur son emplacement, une allée de vingt tilleuls, aménageant ce site en promenade avec des bancs qui prit le nom de Mail ou Place du Bosquet. A son extrémité, la municipalité, pour couvrir les frais de la translation, vendit une parcelle du cimetière où l'on construisit une auberge qui devint en 1885 l'école de filles.

La Poste s'y installa en 1908: cette dernière, créée en 1845 sur le champ de foire (café Joyaux), avait été déménagée en 1891 rue de la Gare (épicerie Padel) avant d'occuper son emplacement actuel. De la Révolution à 1860, au chevet de l'ancienne église, se situait la place de la Liberté où avait été planté l'arbre du même nom en 1792. Celui-ci fut foudroyé en 1797, le dernier, planté en 1848, fut abattu en 1902 pour cause de travaux.

En 1860, la place prit le nom de Place du marché qui s'y tenait tous les mardis et dimanches. Suite à la construction de la nouvelle église (1902/1904), la démolition de l'ancienne (1906/1907), la suppression du Bosquet et de l'arbre de la liberté, la place fut nivelée par M. Autour de Lurais et prit le nom de Place de l'église.

[EN] Until 1830, this square in the center of town, around the old church, was the last resting place of the Tournonnais. In the course of various excavations, graves dating back to the early Middle Ages were found, as well as 12th-century funerary pottery.

Following the transfer of the cemetery to the Douadic road, an avenue of twenty lime trees was planted on its site in 1840, creating a promenade with benches that became known as the Mail or Place du Bosquet. At the far end, to cover the cost of the move, the municipality sold a parcel of cemetery land, where an inn was built. In 1885, this became the girls' school.

The post office moved here in 1908, having been created in 1845 on the fairground (Café Joyaux), and moved in 1891 to rue de la Gare (Padel grocery store) before occupying its current location. From the French Revolution to 1860, the Place de la Liberté was located at the bedside of the former church, where the tree of the same name had been planted in 1792. The tree was struck by lightning in 1797, and the last one, planted in 1848, was felled in 1902 for building work.

In 1860, the square was renamed "Place du Marché" (Market Square), and was used every Tuesday and Sunday. Following the construction of the new church (1902/1904), the demolition of the old one (1906/1907), the removal of the Bosquet and the Tree of Liberty, the square was levelled by M. Autour de Lurais and renamed Place de l'église.
