"The Church of Santo Antão or Parish Church of Santo Antão is a religious monument of the city of Évora, located in Praça do Giraldo, parish of Évora (São Mamede, Sé, São Pedro and Santo Antão).

The Church of Santo Antão has been classified as an Asset of Public Interest since 1970.

It was built by Cardinal D. Henrique, Archbishop of Évora, in the place where the medieval Hermitage of Santo Antoninho was located. For its construction, the Roman Triumphal Arch was demolished.

The church began to be built in 1557, being an example of the late Renaissance, with three naves, presenting the characteristics of the so-called hall churches. It presents a considerable set of gilded altars, highlighting the rare marble front of the main altar that represents the Apostolate, a work from the 14th century, from the old hermitage of Santo Antoninho.

Inside, near the apse, on a side altar to the right, there is a painting by Jerónimo Corte-Real titled Saint Michael and his souls.

In the tower there is a carillon, made up of 10 bells and a transmission keyboard, which in 2023 has been completely silenced for many decades and it is not remembered when it was last played.

This instrument began around 1856, when the first eight bells were installed and only later, in the 1920s, were two more bells and the keyboard added.

In 2023, the instruments will be restored not only materially, but also to recover the tradition of playing manually."
