"The Hermitage of Sant Pau, also known as the Hermitage of Sant Pol or the Church of Sant Pol, is an ancient monastery and fortified church of Sant Pol de Mar (Maresme), declared a cultural asset of national interest.

Construction of a single nave, with a slightly pointed barrel vault roof and two lateral arches. The apse has a semicircular shape and contains three semicircular arch niches with a window. In modern times, the nave was lengthened at the foot of the church, adding a square tower topped by two belfries, one in the south corner and another in the west corner. In 1434, the apse was raised to fortify it. Currently, traces of this reform can still be seen on the outside, where a frieze of blind arches indicates the original height of the apse. The south and west facades are plastered and painted, while the rest of the building is made of exposed stone.

The monastery, founded by Coptic monks, already existed in the year 955 but in the following century it went into decline. In 1048 Ermasenda gave it to Victor of Marseille and in 1053 his situation of misery is documented. In 1061, as a result of frequent pirate attacks, it was abandoned and left in a ruinous state. In 1068, Ramon Berenguer I gave it to the monks of San Honorato de Lerins who established a community for two centuries. But in 1263, through the mediation of the Vatican, they sold it to Guillermo de Montgrí and abandoned it. William, to whom in turn, gave the charterhouse of Escaladei, considerably increasing the heritage of this community. The Carthusians were the only order that allowed the autonomy of the priory with respect to the monastery, which interested the Inquisition due to its action in Vallalta. Then several "spear pits" were established in its domains that were used to execute the heretics who were interrogated in the San Cebrià condominium. The monastery, governed directly by the Vatican which appointed the priors, received various indulgences and privileges from it."
