"El escudo que se usaba hasta 1914 era cuartelado, en el primer y cuarto cuartel estaban las barras catalanas sobre fondo dorado, en el segundo y tercero había cuatro ondas azules que bajaban de izquierda a derecha sobre fondo plateado, en algunas ocasiones las bandas ondeadas desaparecían. También se incorporó ramas de laurel y una corona que aparecía y desaparecía según la situación política.
En 1897 Badalona fue nombrada ciudad y necesitaba tener un escudo oficial. En 1912 el ayuntamiento encargó que se hiciese una investigación y destinó 300 pesetas a dicho estudio.
El trabajo fue encargado a Lluís Domènech i Montaner, arquitecto modernista y uno de los mejores heraldistas de la época.
El 6 de julio de 1914 se aprueba en la sesión del pleno municipal el escudo que hoy conocemos.
Es un escudo de inspiración gótica cuartelado, en el primer y cuarto cuartel están, en mitades, las cuatro barras catalanas sobre fondo dorado. En el segundo y tercer cuartel también en mitades, están las cuatro ondas azules sobre fondo plateado, como símbolos del mar. Estas ondas también recuerdan las ondas del escudo de Gualbes, los nobles más importantes de Badalona en la Edad Media.
La corona fue una creación artística de Domènech i Montaner, así como la rama de laurel, señal de buena fama, y la rama de roble, señal de fortaleza y constancia en las empresas difíciles."
