The Children with Umbrella fountain was completed in 1878. Located in central Genoves Park, the fountain is one of the most popular pieces of Cadiz's artistic heritage.
Based on a 1788 French novel, the fountain depicts a boy and girl named Paul and Virginie who take refuge under an umbrella during a rainfall. Both are barefoot, standing on a small pile of vegetables. The entire sculpture is atop a mound of plant life liberally interspersed with stones.
The fountain was acquired by a Cadiz banker, who in turn ceded it to the City of Cadiz. It was placed in its current position in the 1960's.
in 2018 the City commissioned an exact replica as the original was showing severe wear. Unfortunately, the replica was trashed by vandals
in 2023. It is currently undergoing a slow restoral.
