To date, six paintings by Mary Cassatt have appeared on U.S. postage stamps: One appeared on a 1966 commemorative issue dedicated to the artist, another was included in a 1998 issue celebrating four centuries of American art, and four different paintings comprised this 2003 release, part of a series entitled ‘American Treasures.’ Two of these were from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago and two were from the National Gallery of Art in the nation’s capital.

Mary Cassatt (1844 - 1926) was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, grew up in Philadelphia but lived most of her adult life in France where she became part of the impressionist art scene. This oil-on-canvas painting was completed in 1884 shortly after she returned from Spain where she accompanied her ailing mother at a seaside resort. It shows two young girls playing in the sand by a beach. It was included in the 1886 impressionist exhibition in Paris.
