The original causeway was a wooden structure constructed in 1864 and was 543m in length. It was demolished in 2019 and a new steel and concrete one built, however a short section at each end has been retained.
The Screw Pile Jetty was built in 1879 by blasting 1m-2m holes into the seabed and then screwing in imported metal threaded piles, set in concrete, to which the superstructure was added.
The 350m long Breakwater was also commenced in 1879 and completed in 1882 using 200 000 tons of granite sourced on Granite Island.
