On October 5, 1869 a band of Apaches attacked a stage coach, killing the passangers and the soldiers who formed the escort party. Company G, of 8th U.S. Cavalry was sent out in pursuit and on October 20 an engagement took place in the Chiricahua Mountains in Arizona. For his part in this clash Elwood, along with Privates John Tracy, Charles Ward, Enoch Weiss and Corporal Charles H. Dickens were awarded the Medal of Honor. My picture in the cemetery the day this was marked can be found in the Medal of Honor posting for Y.B. Rowdy.
