Terry Fox is one of Canada's most beloved figures. Diagnosed with cancer at the age of 18, his leg was amputated above the knee. He set out on his Marathon of Hope in Newfoundland on 12 April 1980, with the aim of running across Canada to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. He did not complete his journey before the cancer reappeared in his lungs and took his life on 28 June 1981.
