Memorial at the bell tower for those from Bodö who lost their lives during World War II. The memorial is located in the open square below the bell tower and is surrounded by black iron chains.
The memorial itself is a large square stone where the corners look like rope. On the stone is the following inscription:
"Til minne om de fra Bodö
som ga sitt liv for Norge
under krig og okkupasjon
1940 - 1945
Ingen nevnt ingen glemt"
"In memory of those from Bodö
who gave their lives for Norway
during war and occupation
1940 - 1945
No one mentioned no one forgotten"
27 May 1940 Bodö was not yet occupied by the Germans, but was a day when the entire center was on fire and most of the city was laid in ruins. Of the city's 760 houses, 420 were lost in a German bomb attack. 15 people lost their lives during the bombing and 4000 people had nowhere to live.
The reason why Bodö was bombed was the city's central location in terms of being able to attack the German forces. The Royal Air Force had built an Allied airfield in the city and the Bodoers had participated in the construction. From the airport, British planes were to be deployed in the battle for Narvik.
On 1 June, the first Wehrmacht soldiers arrived in Bodø. The 28 men cycled into the city without problems as all Norwegian and allied troops had been evacuated the day before.
