Sixteen hundred Canadians, 600 of whom gave their lives, served in the Mackenzie Papineau battalion in Spain in the opening days of World War II. They are identified as volunteers on the plaque, however, the plaque also states they were "confronted by the Foreign Enlistment Act of 1937 enacted by the Canadian Government and facing criminal charges under the Act, [they] joined in the struggle to defend the Spanish Republic".
