The half moon has a smiling face consistent with the legend of the man in the moon.
The pub was originally house and the pub dates conversion dates back to the Victorian period.
It is situated close to the river Wear, which can be seen from a rear outside terrace.
During a recent redecoration of the pub the owners were intending to change the sign, but the current sign is so popular with locals that they decided to leave it as it is.
