Frederic Edwin Church was one of the most famous and popular American artists of the nineteenth century. His expansive paintings of Niagara Falls, views of the Andes and other landscapes attracted large audiences when they were displayed. Having been a pupil of Thomas Cole (who was generally accepted as the founder of the Hudson River School of American landscape painters), Church is usually associated with that group. In 2014, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of four postage stamps featuring paintings of the Hudson River School artists. Naturally, Frederic Edwin Church was included.

‘Sunset’ is an oil on canvas painting completed in 1856. Not only did Church paint the picture but he also designed the ornate frame which still surrounds it (but which cannot be seen on the stamp). The painting belongs to the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, now simply called the Munson, located in Utica, New York.
