From the library web site:

Over 100 years old, the building has served several purposes for the town of Bluff. Originally, the building was the Bluff school house. Bluff's first permanent school was an imposing structure with a belfry, gabled roof, arched window, and in the 1930's a hardwood floor you could roller skate on.

In the early 1900's, the building was almost destroyed by fire. The remains of the building were remodeled into a much reduced in size San Juan County jail in the 1960's. The old jail was abandoned in the early 1980's and has since been remodeled into the Bluff Library.
