La Academia de Cine Europea (European Film Academy – EFA) ha concedido al Desierto de Tabernas el título "Tesoro de la Cultura Cinematográfica Europea”. Con este reconocimiento se pone en valor este paraje natural que ha acogido más de 300 rodajes de películas desde 1950 hasta la actualidad, un escenario cinematográfico que destacó por los "spaghetti western” conocidos a nivel mundial entre los años 60 y 70 y dónde actualmente se registra una gran actividad con todo tipo de rodajes y algunas superproducciones.

La figura central de la época dorada del western europeo fue Sergio Leone y su mítica "Trilogía del dólar” que encumbró la carrera de Clint Eastwood con "Per un pugno di dollari” (1964), "Per qualche dollaro in più” (1965) y "Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo” (1966). También es de destacar "El halcón y la presa” (1967), "C'era una volta il West” ó "Shalako”, ambas de 1968, "100 rifles” (1969), "El condor” (1970) o "Soleil rouge” (1971), entre otros muchos de Terence Young. Y cientos de películas, como algunas de la saga de Bud Spencer y Terence Hill. Más recientemente "800 balas” (2002), "Blueberry” (2003), "Los Dalton contra Lucky Luke” (2005), "Brimston” (2016) o "The Sister Brothers” (2018).

El Desierto de Tabernas también ha sido escenario europeo elegido por grandes producciones internacionales como "Lawrence of Arabia” (1962), "Cleopatra” (1963), "Patton” (1970), "Conan the barbarian” (1982), "Indiana Jones and the last crusade” (1989) o "Exodus, Gods and Kings” (2014) y series como "Doctor Who”, "Penny Dreadful”, "Black Mirror” o "Games of Thrones”. Y cientos de videoclips y spots de publicidad de reconocidas marcas internacionales.

El Paraje Natural Desierto de Tabernas, declarado en 1989, considerado como la única zona desértica de todo el continente europeo, cuenta con una extensión de 280 kilómetros cuadrados y comprende cinco municipios (Tabernas, Gádor, Santa Cruz de Marchena, Alboloduy y Gérgal). Ofrece una ingente y rica variedad de recursos ambientales de interés, donde se han formado ramblas de tipo mediterráneo conocidas como "bad lands”, protagonistas de muchas escenas de la gran pantalla. Una Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA), Lugar de Interés Comunitario (LIC) y Zona de Especial Conservación (ZEC) que forma parte de la Red Ecológica Europea Natura 2000.

The European Film Academy (EFA) has awarded the Tabernas Desert the title "Treasure of European Cinematographic Culture." The Tabernas Desert Natural Area, declared in 1989, considered the only desert area on the entire European continent, has an area of ??280 square kilometers and includes five municipalities (Tabernas, Gádor, Santa Cruz de Marchena, Alboloduy and Gérgal).
